Sparkes (social theory, U. of Exeter, UK), 'an enthusiastic but self- taught qualitative researcher,' attempts to suggest new ways that other researchers can write about sport and physical activity. He explores the rhetorical devices of a number of different genres of research writing. The scientific, realist, confessional, autoethnographic, poetic, ethnodramatic, and ethnographic fictional styles are all examined as methods of representation. A final chapter examines the debates among researchers as to the appropriateness of these various forms of representation.
