This new edition of an index of the languages of the world is a response to the recurring reference problem: to identify languages and dialects, to classify them and, if necessary, to determine the correct spelling. A solution to this problem is not self-evident, given the considerable inconsistencies in other language reference books. The increasing number of books concerning hitherto less known languages, and the considerable progress in researching and classifying such languages has made a new edition a risk. Nevertheless it would seem convenient to use the chance of a new edition to eliminate some shortcomings of the previous edition which were not the fault of the author and to supplement the book with many new findings. A guide book which attempts to provide simultaneously the many names of each individual language in other languages still seems to be desirable.
