This book is intended to be used as a review for medical students preparing for the USMLE board exams. Its purpose is to synthesize microbiology and infectious diseases into essential facts and concepts. Although intended to prepare students for the nature of questions that they will encounter on the boards, its format will facilitate review for any test of students' understanding of medical microbiology. The case-based studies and comprehensive exam questions provide students with a self-test of problem-solving skills that are essential to their professional development. The book was written specifically to prepare medical students for their boards. However, its concise reviews are excellent study guides for those students throughout their studies. This guide would also be of great value to undergraduates taking advanced courses or medical technology and PhD-track students. The book consists of sections reviewing bacteriology, immunity and infection, clinical bacteriology, virology, clinical virology, mycology, parasitology, and major infectious diseases. Each of 57 chapters is in an outline format that is logical and consistent throughout the text. Figures and tables appropriately reinforce the text. The Comprehensive Exam questions reflect the intent of the National Board of Medical Examiners: to test students for their ability to solve clinically relevant problems by integrating facts and basic scientific concepts. The Answers and Discussions section demonstrates the stepwise process of interpreting the clinical situation and indicates the appropriate areas of the text that review it in depth. This is an excellent tool for review of microbiology and infectious diseases; theconcise and logical format of this text will facilitate the most efficient and successful preparation of any conscientious student for the USMLE board exam.
