The latest edition of this classic text continues to set a high standard for introductory literature anthologies by maintaining the traditions that have made it a success while continuing to evolve through the addition of fresh, new readings.   Authors of collectively more than a dozen texts for both literature and composition, this distinguished team provides integrated coverage of the elements of literature and extensive discussions of the writing process.  Carefully selected classic and contemporary works, arranged in innovative and enlightening ways, incorporate a range of diverse voices. The balanced coverage of classical and contemporary selections-including a strong representation of women and minority authors-helps students from all backgrounds realize the underlying commonality between cultures as well as recognize themselves within the literature. This anthology contains an impressive number of readings:  nearly 300 poems, 60 stories, and 15 plays, plus an entire novel.Seven casebooks throughout provide an in-depth look at an author or a particular work.  Each casebook contains critical essays, interviews with authors, and student model essays in order to contextualize the readings and encourage student research and critical thinking.  Casebooks feature Flannery O'Connor, Raymond Carver, Alice Munro, Emily Dickinson, Robert Frost, Langston Hughes, and Shakespeare's Hamlet. This edition continues to offer superb writing coverage.  The first chapter focuses on approaching and responding to literature, while the second chapter delves into each aspect of writing an effective essay from prewriting to revising.   "In Brief" chapters provide genre-specific writing topics, such as "Theme" in Fiction and "Diction" in Poetry, and guidelines that students can apply to a particular reading.  Sample student response essays are also included with notes written about the student's own process.   The inclusion of Kate Chopin's short novel The Awakening allows instructors the opportunity to teach a longer work without assigning an additional text for purchase.  Critical-thinking questions and writing topics, along with biographical information and pictures of Chopin, contextualize the piece for students as well.Abundant visual material including facsimiles of manuscripts, author portraits, visual portfolios, and spot images can be found throughout the text.  Chapter 25 pairs ten poems with inspirational paintings and offers students specific advice for writing about poetry and art.
