This five-volume set for middle school and high school students is nicely prepared, with enough text to convey some depth of information and a wise forbearance on the number of illustrations (b&w line drawings and small b&w photos) -- avoiding the condescending look of some aggressively colorful references for this age group. The chapters include plenty of pedagogical material (vocabulary lists, activities, website and print resources, organizations); and each volume contains the full index. The volumes address, respectively, earth systems and ecology, resources and energy, people and their environments, human impact, and creating a sustainable society.
