In mid-1981 a team of researchers supported by the French Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales and the University of Warsaw spent several months interviewing activist members of Solidarity. Using a technique called 'sociological intervention' developed by Touraine for the dynamic analysis of social movements, the researchers led six groups in major Polish cities to several . . . conclusions about the movement; it is, they feel, simultaneously a workers' movement and a nationalist movement, a trade union and an agent for social change.
