John Trimbur and Harvey Kail author a new Foreword that situates the book in its historical context, explaining how the philosophy that informs the book developed and demonstrating how it continues to influence classroom pedagogy to this day.The sixteen formal writing exercises ask students to write a position paper, then write a descriptive outline of their paper explaining how it is organized, and then exchange papers with fellow students to write descriptive outlines of each others' works-demonstrating that both a text's author and audience work together to create meaning.
