Elastic foundations are modelled either as Winkler springs or elastic half-space-type continua (isotropic or cross-anisotropic). The solution techniques applied incorporate a variant of the direct stiffness method (beams, strips, tank walls) and energy based finite difference approach (circular plates, tank bases, roof plates). For analysis of tank roofs in the form of shells of revolution (large-diameter tanks - one of the new features), a finite element method is employed. Most load types of practical importance are catered for, including temperature change and shrinkage/swelling effects (circular plates and cylindrical tanks).
