The microfiche edition Polish Biographical Archive (PAB) contains with the Supplement (PAB-S) biographical articles from 333 reference books amounting to about 500 volumes published between the 17th and the middle of the 20th century. For this Archive biographical entries from encyclopedias, manuals, calendars and almanacs, hitherto scattered around the world, have been cumulated. In many cases they present the only recorded information on individuals from Poland. Now, for the very first time in the history of historical-biographical publications on Poland extensive historical material has been made available in a single work. The 718 microfiches of the Polish Biographical Archive and its Supplement present a unique and comprehensive survey of cultural, economic and social life as well as of the various ethnic groups who have shaped the history of Poland. In its four alphabetically arranged volumes, the Polish Biographical Index gives access to the c. 88,500 individuals and about 150,000 biographical articles in the Archive and its Supplement, thus offering biographical information on individuals ranging from the 8th century up to the middle of this century. The Index specifies every individual's name with his/her biographical dates and profession. References as to where the entries are to be found in the Polish Biographical Archive and its Supplement plus the abbreviated titles of the 333 biographical sources used are given as well. A special list contains the key to these abbreviations.Primarily, the Polish Biographical Index serves as a register to the Polish Biographical Archive and its Supplement. Thanks to its highly condensed form it greatly aids search and selection of individuals listed in PAB and PAB-S. Furthermore, as a work in its own right, the Index presents a highly valuable tool for biographical research: information given by the Index leads to an immediate identification of the person in question as well as his/her historical classification. The Polish Biographical Index allows its user direct access to the biographical source, both the original work in printed form and the microfiches of the Polish Biographical Archive and the Supplement. It therefore constitutes an essential reference work for anybody interested for private or academic purposes in the history of Poland.
