During a car accident a boy succeeds in fleeing from an orphanage, where the kids are tortured and used for experiments with pharmaceutical and chemical test substances. In a generally hostile, future world he finds shelter among a gang of young people who are dedicated to the fight against strange supernatural beings, who seem to appear always just in time when human beings are severely injured or suffering from great pain. Of course the boy (and with him the reader) assumes that those creatures, that can only be seen by certain persons, must be dangerous for mankind and should be destroyed.
