In the 17th century the Heidelberg 'Bibliotheca Palatina' was described as the 'treasure house of German learning'. It was transported to Rome in 1623 and the bulk of it has been housed at the Vatican library ever since. The microfiche edition, which was produced between 1989 and 1995 and consists of 21,103 silver fiches, made the complete printed books available in their entirety to scholars throughout the world. The 21,116 bibliographical items (in 17 sections) of the Bibliotheca Palatina represent works not only belonging to the 'Stampati Palatina' collection. Parts of what was once the most important Protestant library are now housed at other libraries scattered in and around Rome (e.g. Collegio Greco). The entire collection has now been fully catalogued and indexed. Bibliographic entries arranged according to author and title contain full bibliographical information, including references to the relevant microfiches and thus to the full text of the work. The Catalogue also contains a further six convenient indexes, an index of library shelf marks, persons (editors, translators and illustrators etc.), an index of printers and publishers, places of printing and publication, of years of publication and of microfiche numbers and frames. The Catalogue and microfiche edition make it possible to survey the Palatina's broad spectrum of literature, and access works from the vast range of represented subjects, languages and countries of origin. They will therefore make a splendid resource for anyone working in the field of history -- 'a priceless treasure' as the Palatina was described as far back as 350 years ago.
