The Michaelmas Daisy

Ocena: 6 (1 głosów)

The Michaelmas Daisy: a contemporary story of loneliness, loyalty, love, finding new friends, and hope.

Beverley may be dead, but that doesn’t make it any easier to let go. She watches over her husband and daughter, sharing their pain, laughter, fears and dreams. As she watches, memories of her own life and love for her husband bring comfort and tears in equal measure.

Her daughter, Philippa (58, divorced),looks after her ailing father. She does so willingly, but caring for him 24/7 takes great patience and compassion, and such devotion is isolating.

Into their home comes Kaska (39). She provides respite care, brings kindness and energy, and helps Philippa realise it’s ok to still want some life of her own.

As her father’s condition worsens, Philippa’s dedication is tested to the full and difficult choices are necessary.

The Michaelmas Daisy: written in honour of those in need of care, and those who care for them.

The Michaelmas Daisy - opinie o książce

"[...] Being dead is sad. For us and the living, though they may not know it. [...]"

"The Michaelmas Daisy" by Paul Marriner is a beautiful, sad and powerful read. The author dedicated it to all people suffering from dementia.

After reading this, I am shocked and afraid of my old age. I do not want to be a burden to my children. I am literally terrified.

I thank the author for drawing our attention to the difficult topic of dementia. Let's not be afraid to admit that the sick and their families suffer. Patients with this disease usually do not recognize their loved ones, ask the same question several times, are confused and anxious. They are often accompanied by other diseases. They shouldn't be left alone at home, because it can end in many ways. The families of such patients suffer because they can't watch their life slowly drain away every day. And they often get upset when they have to repeat who they are several times a day.

The book "The Michaelmas Daisy" is written from the perspective of a deceased mother who is constantly protecting her living husband and daughter. She remembers what it was like when she was alive. Now she watches anxiously as her daughter struggles with her father's illness. Thanks to Paul Marriner, you will also be able to watch this closely.

Our characters include:

- Beverley Cooper - she has been dead for eight years, but she still watches over her family. She is the narrator of this story.

- Philippa Cooper is the daughter of Beverley and Kenny. She is fifty-nine years old and has been divorced for eight years. I felt sorry for her mother's death and her father's illness. She lives with her father and helps him with everyday life.

- Kenny Cooper is a widower and Philippa's father. He is eighty-nine years old. He loves Bond movies. He struggles with dementia.

- Kaska is a social worker. Will she bring something good to the Cooper family? Or will she just be an ordinary servant? Her life is not a bed of roses either.

Those who have never met people with dementia will never understand the patient and their closest family. That is why I advise you to read the story hidden in the pages of the novel "The Michaelmas Daisy" by Paul Marriner. After reading this book, you will understand this disease better. I secretly hope that one day they will invent a cure for it.

Imagine looking at your own children and not recognizing them. What do you feel - fear, terror, or maybe confusion?

This story is worth your attention.

Despite the difficult plot, I read this novel in one day. You cannot put this book on the shelf until you know the whole story.
