Recent Dynamics of Mediterranean Vegetation & Landscape

As part of its work the under the auspices of the Environment Programme of the European Commission, the ModMED research project analyzed the vegetation at sites in Italy, Greece, and Portugal using aerial photo-interpretation. They showed major expansion of shrubland and forests in previously cultivated and grazed areas, in contrast to the widely assumed ongoing climate-driven desertification in the Mediterranean area. Scientists from outside the project team were commissioned to investigate a larger number of sites around the Mediterranean to find out what was going on. Mostly from the northern coast of the Mediterranean, they look at the rapid changes that have taken place in the region over the past half century, at a spatial scale between traditional broad-scale characterizations and detailed small-area studies.
