Oracle Database 10g Express Edition PHP Web Programming explains how to use the PHP programming language to build applications against the Oracle database product. PHP is an open source, server-side, HTML embedded scripting language used to create dynamic Web pages and an estimated 16 million users (approximately 47% of all web pages) use PHP. Oracle Database 10g Express Edition (Oracle Database XE) is Oracle’s new, free database offering. PHP and the Oracle Database XE database management system (DBMS) are a potent combination. Both are free of charge for most purposes--remarkably strong, and capable of handling enterprise-level loads. Both are supported by large, skilled, and enthusiastic communities of architects, programmers, and designers. This book introduces readers (who are assumed to have little or no experience with the title subjects) to PHP and Oracle Database XE. The book will focus on introducing the PHP language in context of the Oracle Database X!E product while providing appendices to support other Oracle configurations. This approach positions the book as a general offering and not product or release specific book. Configuration information will enable Red Hat Linux and Microsoft Windows configurations.
