Deutschsprachige Exilliteratur seit 1933 provides an overview of German-speaking exile literature in the USA. Exiled authors are those German-speaking authors who emigrated during the Thirties due to political or ethnic reasons, resulting directly or indirectly from Hitler's taking power. Exile literature refers not to the works of former emigrants after their return, but to the literature written by emigrants during their exile. The series includes film, theatre and literary essays in addition to the belles-lettres. With the publishing of part-volume 3/5 the series is now complete! Volume 1 and 2 focus mainly on emigration to California and New York. Important writers of German literature found refuge here, such as Bertolt Brecht, Lion Feuchtwanger, Thomas Mann, Billy Wilder, Rose Ausländer, Hermann Broch, Oskar Maria Graf and Soma Morgenstern - many remained for the rest of their lives. Both volumes mirror the significance of California and New York for the intellectual, cultural and literary scene in the USA. Among the authors dealt with in Volume 1 - California, are authors who wrote for the Film industry in Hollywood. Volume 2 - New York is concerned with emigrants who went to New York, the arena for some of the most significant controversies regarding National Socialism and exile. Volume 3, published in five parts, presents portraits of more than 80 literary figures, e.g. Ernst Bloch, George Grosz, Siegfried Kracauer, Erika Mann, Max Ophüls, Paul Tillich and Eric Voegelin. Volume 3/3 to 3/5 contains further portraits of authors along with articles dealing specifically with the problems of emigration and the conditions in which emigrants had to live. The emigration of German-speaking publishers, the lecturing activities of writers in exile, German-speaking book illustrators, children's and youth literature in American exile and Roosevelt's image among German-speakers in exile in the USA, are among the subjects broached. The last Part-Volume 3/5 offers portraits of authors such as Karl Frank, Hans Rothe and Victoria Wolff, for example. With the help of the latest research findings, this volume has succeeded in recalling a large number of less-known exile writers to memory, as did the previous volumes. Essays address subjects such as German Studies in exile and the American emigration of German and Austrian antique book dealers. Also included are studies of the international context of German-speakers in exile in the USA, whereby French, Italian and Spanish authors are considered. In addition, the volume offers a thoroughly revised and completed list "Exiljahre in den USA" (Exile Years in the USA), listing the exact details of the time in exile of all German-speaking writers in the USA included in the five volumes. An extensive index of names and subjects enables quick access to the entire third volume. Volume 4 contains, in three part volumes, a total of 225 personal bibliographies, of which 150 are the first bibliographies for these people. Beyond being a regional grouping of the people covered by the bibliographies, these bibliographic volumes amount to a reference work, bibliographically documenting a series of individual characters of the German-speaking exile for the first time, and supplements already existing personal bibliographies of many others. For the compilation of a number of individual personal bibliographies, relatives of the authors and those who witnessed the exile were involved as assistants and writers of articles. A few exile authors have prepared their own bibliographies themselves, and even revised or at least authorised them. The literary estates of most authors with bibliographically relevant material were consulted and analysed. For literary research the great value of Deutschsprachige Exilliteratur seit 1933 lies, above all, in the collection, sifting and evaluation of the dispersed material and in the inclusion of less famous or forgotten authors as well as the more celebrated ones. This publication presents a unique survey of the entire range of German-speaking authors-in-exile in the USA and is intended to stimulate further critical studies in this field.
