The Dictionary of German Biography provides information in a single alphabetical sequence on some 60,000 significant personalities from across the whole German-speaking region, from the early days of written documentation up to and including the present. Only German-speaking individuals who are now deceased are taken into account in the Dictionary. In the first volume, for example, the user will find biographical details on Angilbert, poet and political advisor to Charlemagne, on the Benedictine abbot von Aniane (both born c. 750), as well as on modern figures such as the famous Bavarian actor Gustl Bayrhammer (who died in 1993) and the banker Hermann Josef Abs (1901-1994).Upon completion, no other German-language work will match the Dictionary of German Biography as an extensive, precise biographical information resource. The Dictionary of German Biography closes a pronounced gap amongst German reference works. It not only provides answers to targeted questions, but also stimulates the perusing reader with a wealth of surprising biographical portrayals, facts and minutiae. The Dictionary of German Biography represents a gainful and far-sighted purchase for public and academic libraries, for historical institutes, schools, colleges and universities and for the interested layperson. The Dictionary of German Biography provides its readers with biographical information in clear, precise articles, whereby the aim is to effect the utmost in factual reliability. The quality and accuracy of the DBE are guaranteed by the Editor-in-Chief and the Editorial Advisory Board, as well as the authors of the individual articles. The articles in the Dictionary of German Biography are made up of the name, dates of birth and death, biography and literary references. Each entry heading comprises the surname (with all name variations), first name and mark of nobility, as appropriate. Pseudonyms, maiden name, and wrongly attributed names are also given. The occupation of the biographee is followed by dates and places of birth and death. The articles contain the most relevant factual biographical details, informing the reader of the life and work of the biographees, their place of origin, education, significant encounters, career developments, places of activity, characteristic work, achievements, friendships and relationships, group and association affiliation, reception and, in individual cases, prizes and honours. The Dictionary of German Biography contains more detailed articles on particularly significant people. These have been written and signed by authors who are regarded as authorities on their subject matter.A highly qualified editorial team under experienced editorial management is responsible for all other articles.Index VolumesTwo supplementary volumes round off the encyclopedia. The supplement to volume 11 contains biographies of more than 1,200 people who either died during the making of the encyclopedia or had not previously been considered. The author index lists all 536 authors of the articles in volumes 1 to 11 giving the titles of their articles and is followed by an overview of the many signed articles, listing the articles by title and including their authors. Most of this volume is dedicated to the alphabetically arranged index of persons covered in volumes 1 to 11, which includes about 58,000 people on whom articles have been written and a further 12,000 persons refered to in the texts. Volume 12 contains a comprehensive index of places covering a total of about 19,000 locations thus providing access to the biographies included in the main part via place of birth and death and region of influence. In addition, an index of professions with more than 1,400 key-words allows specific searches for particular groups of people.
