Upsetting the delicate balance of a family is always a fraught proposition. Joanna Trollope`s new novel, Brother and Sister, explores just such a shift. Nathalie and David, who have been raised as sister and brother by nurturing adoptive parents, decide to seek out their birth mothers. Until now, in their thirties, neither has felt this need. In fact, Nathalie had declared that being adopted allowed her to choose the person she wanted to be. However, two random events set her on her journey, and she persuades David to do the same for himself. Only then do they acknowledge how apart each has felt from those around them. Before the book is over, their search affects all those close to them, Nathalie and David`s children, partners and parents are all caught up in the repercussions of the quests.
